This walk has been designed
as a stroll through mountain and lakeside
scenery rather than a lung-busting push for a big
The main attractions are two lakes and a
small but attractive summit, Monte Palera
(1425m), overlooking Lago Paduli. The simplicity of
the walk combined with its proximity to Villa Papavero provide
an enjoyable but shorter day's walking.
Start from the Car Park at Passo di
Lagastrello on path 00 heading north-north-east. This delightful path
traverses above the lake through varied woodlands for
~1.5 miles before reachin a junction with path 703
on the shores of Lago Squincio.
here onto path 703, heading south-east for 200m before
reaching the main road, SS665. Turn left on the
SS665 for 200m before turning right onto a minor road for a
further 200m to reach the Car Park at the northern end of Lago
From the Car Park take path 659a, which climbs south
eastwards, steeply at first, but then more gradually
southwards for 1.2 miles before meeting path 00, as the stem
of a "T" junction. (After 0.7 miles of this ascent, ignore a
left turn option on an alternative branch of 659a which
zig-zags steeply upwards to the east).
At the "T" junction, turn right, heading south-westwards on
path 00 for ~200m, watching for an unmarked path which forks
off right to the summit of Monte Palera. Path 00 by-passes
Monte Palera on its south side.
However, our Recommended Route takes the unmarked right
fork to visit this delightful little summit before returning
to join path 00 again 500m further on. This summit is a great
place for a lunch stop, with commanding views acroaa Lago
Paduli to Monte Bocco beyond..
After rejoining path 00, it begins a gradual 1.3 mile
descent, westwards ar first, and then northwards, back to the
Car Park at Passo di Lagastrello.
