Overview
The "Recommended Route" is the same as that in the Tuscany North book, starting from a car park, on the right, hand side of the road, at the far end of the lake, beyond Passo Lagastrello.

It is a 5.5 mile clockwise loop via Monte Bocco, with a 1 mile "tail" used for both the walk-in and the walk-out. It ascends the north-east ridge of Monte Bocco via a number of subsidiary peaks. The descent is via the main piste of the Prato Spilla ski slope.

Detail
Follow path 00 northwards from opposite the car park, along the banks of Lago Squincio Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, turning gradually to the west. After 1 mile, a  path junction is reached after a brief ascent through woodlands Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. Path 703 branches off to the right. This is the return route.

Bear left here, still on path 00, and begin the ascent onto the main ridge. The path climbs steeply for half a mile through thick woodland and is difficult under foot.

Arrival on the ridge comes as a surprise because it coincides with a climb over a high style out of the wooded area. Only 10 metres after climbing the style the ridge ahead provides fantastic views on both sides - heavily wooded valleys and hillsides, but with rocky and barren mountain ridges soaring above Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

Follow the ridge south-westwards Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos for 0.5 miles, with sweeping views on both sides Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos to reach the first summit - Monte Malpasso Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

Continue south-westwards Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos along the undulating grassy ridge Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, up and over Cima Canuti Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, and after a further mile of pennine-like scenery Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, reach the summit of Monte Bocco Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

Looking northwards from the summit of Monte Bocco Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos reveals a variety of high level ski tows Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos - the upper reaches of the Prato Spilla Ski complex Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

Broken rocks and steep scree prevent a direct descent  from the summit cairn to the main ski run Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. However, there are two lower saddles on the main ridge, offering easier descents, one 400 metres further on Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, and one 400m further back Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

There are excellent views back along the main ridge Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos during the descent Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos to the cabin at the top of the main ski lift Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. This cabin looked a little different in early September from our previous visit during the ski season Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

From here, descend the left side of the main Prato Spilla ski slope Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos to join path 705 Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos which leads down to Rifugio Prato Spilla.

Descend on the Rifugio supply road for 200m, and then turn right onto  path 703 heading initially north-eastwards through woodlands Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

After 300m the path swings to the south-east and passes two small lakes Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos to reach the major path junction mentioned in the first paragraph. From here return to the car park by reversing the "tail" of the route on path 00 Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.
