Overview
The Recommended Route is the same as the "Bocchi", anti-clockwise, short route. It uses the quarry road from the outskirts of Ugliancaldo to get much closer to the start of the Tordini Galligani VF.

Detail
Drive up the quarry road from the outskirts of Ugliancaldo and park at the barrier which prevents entry into the quarries Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.  From here ascend southwards on the quarry road Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, through two quarries and then onto path 190 through woodlands. After 400m on path 190, turn left at a sign for the Tordini Galliani via ferrata. Climb gently south-eastwards for 600m, crossing a stream bed, before reaching the foot of the VF Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

The VF follows a rock rib Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, almost due eastwards Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, to gain Uccello's south-east ridge at Foce Siggioli. During the early stages there are plenty of shrubs Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos and young trees Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos so short rests can be taken with the benefit of shade Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

The angle of the rib Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos varies from 70 to 80 degrees Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, making the climbing relatively easy Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, and there are plenty of handholds and footholds Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. In places some of these have been artificially created Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos by cutting holes into the rock Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

The cable and stansions are relatively new and in good condition Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. There are also occasional rock bastions Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos which add interest to the climb Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, as well as providing small secure platforms for resting Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos and/or refreshment stops.

The rock is clean, grippy and reliable Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos, making the climb a pleasure in dry weather. However, it involves 550m of vertical climbing ascent Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos and can be very hot in sunny summer conditions, so take plenty of water and suntan cream.

The only difficulty is the exposure. It should not be attempted by the faint-hearted. Looking back down 800 metres to the quarry below Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos is either exhilarating or terrifying, dependent on your disposition.

Throughout the climb there are great  views Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos across to Uccello's north face. However, there are none better than those from the security of the summit ridge, enhanced by the euphoria of having completed the climb Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

After a break and celebrations, head southwards along the narrow rocky ridge, ascending at first to a high point at Capradosso Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. From here continue southwards on the ever broadening ridge through pleasant meadow-like sceneryBlue Camera Image for Linking Photos.

After 0.7 miles walking from the top of the via ferrata a path junction is reached at Poggio Baldozzana. The main path continues southwards along the ever broadening ridge to reach the Minnuciano to Ugliancando road, 0.7 miles from Ugliancaldo.

However, our route takes path 192 which turns off to the left and descends initially north-westwards through thick woodland Blue Camera Image for Linking Photos. This path junction is quite difficult to find so it is wise to start searching for it after 0.5 miles from the via ferrata.

After 500m the path turns to a more westerly direction and then descends for a further 500m in a series of zig-zags to meet the quarry road, just 100m below the barrier where the car is parked.

Walk Description

As Above

This route is designed for circumstances where some members of the party do not want to do the Via Ferrata climb. It is a completely different walk, starting at the entrance to the quarry road just outside Ugliancaldo.

From Ugliancaldo follow path 181 south west to ascend the northern ridge of Pizzo d'Uccello, as far as the grassy saddle of Poggio Baldozzzana. There are magnificent views of the north face of Uccello and the Tordini Galligani VF.

At the path junction, just below Poggio Baldozzana, turn right onto path 192 to descend steeply westwards, through woodlands, to the barrier on the quarry road. Return to Ugliancaldo using the quarry road.
